Severus Snape was born in January of 1959, to two strangely dissimilar parents -- a Witch mother, who believed in the eternal binding power of love, and a Muggle father, who believed in the power of fear and strong discipline. He was always a small and sickly child, which infuriated his father, who expected his son to be a "real man", with extra magical firepower. Severus spent most of his time at home underfed and clothed in his father's cast-offs, by no fault of his mother, who simply couldn't provide well, with the piddling resources Tobias provided.
In about 1968 or '69, Severus met a neighbourhood girl, by the name of Lily Evans. The two quickly became best friends, as she did not judge him on his appearance, which was an odd state of affairs. The two continued their friendship through their years at Hogwarts.
At the age of 11, Severus received his Hogwarts letter, and went joyfully off to school, believing his mother's stories of it as an enchanted and friendly place. Sadly, in 1970, with the Dark Lord's rise, Slytherin House was more competitive than ever, and the opportunities, as a Slytherin, to befriend others outside the house was extremely limited. The longer he stayed, the more bitter he became, realising that school was little different from home, except that the authority figures at the school tended toward less violent punishments. He consoled himself with the thought that he was getting smarter and had three extravagant meals, every day -- when he remembered to leave his experiments long enough to eat.
By the summer of 1972, Severus had fallen in with Lucius Malfoy, who saw him as a prodigy best encouraged for later uses. That fall, he grudgingly rescued Rodolphus Lestrange from a beating by Crabbe and Goyle, and has been unable to rid himself of the fey Irishman, since.
